In 2007 the Alabama Society for Health Care Social Workers began investigating the possibility of awarding a scholarship to a Master’s level individual.

The membership approved this endeavor, criteria were written, and the board approved the first recipient.  Stephanie Kenney will receive her Master’s in May from Florida State University. She has been a social worker for 13 years with her concentration in geriatric care.  She is currently a hospice social worker.  She is in hopes of transitioning to perinatal care upon completion of her degree/license. When asked why she pursued a master’s in social work her comment was “I have always had a passion for helping people. I wanted a career that would allow me to make a difference in the lives of others. Social work was appealing to me because of the broad spectrum of career opportunities.”

When asked about the scholarship she said, “Receiving the scholarship this semester made it possible for me to complete a full time internship and finish the requirements for my MSW.  During my internship, I had to reduce my employment hours to a minimum so that I could fulfill my requirement for hours in the internship.  Since my family depends on my income for daily living expenses, I was anticipating a financial strain; however, receiving the scholarship played a significant part in helping to reduce the financial burden.”

The Society does plan to pursue the scholarship in the future as finances allow.
