COVID-19 Update

 Friday, March 13, 2020

The situation with the virus is changing very quickly and will likely continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Listed below are some of the updates from this week:

This morning the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) confirmed Alabama’s first COVID-19 case. The patient lives in Montgomery County and had recently traveled to Illinois.

The World Health Organization (WHO) this week declared that COVID-19 is now a global pandemic.

ADPH held news conference yesterday in which Dr. Harris announced that he is working with hospitals and others to establish regional screening sites. In addition, he mentioned that ADPH would be revising the screening criteria to allow for increased testing.

In anticipation of soon-to-come federal dollars, the Alabama legislature appropriated $5 million this week to help support the state’s response to the virus.

Several insurers have adapted their policies to address co-pays and prior authorizations for testing (see AlaHA webpage for more information).

AlaHA developed a one-page COVID-19 update for hospitals to use in communicating with the general public.

All of these resources and more are located at under “Coronavirus.”
